Medical Universities in Bulgaria
Medical universities in Bulgaria provide medical study in English and Bulgarian. Medical study in English in Bulgaria (medicine for 6 years, dentistry for 6 years, pharmacy for 5 years, nursing for 4 years, Midwifery for 4 years programs) require strong motivation, good command of both written and spoken English and good marks in high school. The proficiency in English language is proved either by providing an international recognised certificate of English, or by sitting a test in English for Academic Medical Studies administered by the Department of Foreign Languages at respective Medical University.
The successful students of the 6-year and 5 year programs of academic studies obtain a Diploma of completed higher medical education. Graduates are conferred Masters Degree along with the professional qualification physician, dentist or pharmacist. The possession of that degree enables the holder to practice medicine in any of European Union countries and beyond. Medical Universities in Bulgaria are recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) of the United States. Graduates can practice in the United States after passing the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) and are certified by the ECFMG.
The only language of medical postgraduate studies (Residency, Doctorate etc.) in Bulgaria is Bulgarian. All medical Universities organise Bulgarian preparatory course for medical studies. Also student without enough command of English wishing to undergo medical study in Bulgaria in English can follow one year medical English preparatory year after which he can automatically be enrolled in the course he wish.
MEDICAL UNIVERSITY - SOFIA
Medical University – Sofia (MUS) has a unique place in the Bulgarian education system. Fee for the exams in Bulgarian/English, Biology and Chemistry in Bulgarian/English: 400 BGN, fee to be deposited at Department of language training and Sports (DLTS).

Medical University - Pleven
Medical University – Pleven, one of the five medical universities in Bulgaria, was established in 1974, aiming to expand the horizons, size and reputation of the City Hospital, founded in 1865. Today, combining traditions of the past with the present possibilities, it incorporates educational and therapeutic facilities, contemporary pre-clinical base, University Hospital with more than 1000 beds and clinics in all major medical fields, as well as a large number of specialized clinics and research units with modern diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. These are efficiently used to treat patients, train students, trainee doctors, post-graduates as well as for research work.
MU – Pleven has all theoretic, pre-clinical and clinical departments required for higher medical education. Up to date, more than 6000 Bulgarian and foreign students from over 30 countries have graduated from the University. The current number of students is 2044. 275 of them are foreign students, including 78 of Indian nationality – the biggest community of foreign students at the university at the moment of writing. International students come from many countries: Macedonia, Serbia, Ukraine, Moldova, Greece, Turkey, Nigeria, Albania, Cyprus, Congo, Syria, Algeria, USA, Japan, Great Britain and France. At the moment of writing, 835 young doctors from Bulgaria and abroad are taking postgraduate courses at the different specialized clinics of the University Hospital.
The current number of PhD students is 53.
The University has two students hostels with over 400 beds. The hostel rooms are double- and triple- bed rooms, centrally heated, each having a bathroom. Students are not required to live in hostels and may go into private accommodation if they wish. Meals are provided at the students’ canteen at a discount. The sports facilities at the University enable the students to have regular physical training in different sport disciplines. There is an indoor multipurpose sports center, basketball and volleyball fields and tennis courts.

The Medical University of Plovdiv was established as a medical faculty of Plovdiv University in 1945. In 1950 the faculty became the independent Medical Academy – Plovdiv. It was renamed in 1972 to Higher Medical Institute – Plovdiv. The Faculty of Dental Medicine was established in 1974, while a Medical College was created in 1997 as a subsidiary of the Medical University of Plovdiv. The Higher Medical Institute was renamed to Medical University of Plovdiv in 2002 after a decision by Bulgaria`s National Assembly. The university has more than 3,500 national and international students, as well as more than 600 teachers and researchers. Medical University Plovdiv provides training to students of Medicine, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy, Health Care Management, Nursing, Midwife and auxiliary medical specialists. The university offers training in Master’s degree programs following the completion of Bachelor’s programs – Health Care Management and postgraduate training in doctoral and specialist courses in a number of specialties.
Plovdiv is the second-largest city in Bulgaria with a population of 341,567 inhabitants as of 2015. It is the administrative center of Plovdiv Province and the municipalities of the City of Plovdiv, Maritsa municipality, and Rodopi municipality, whose municipal body had a population of 404,665 inhabitants as of 2015. It is an important economic, transport, cultural, and educational center. Plovdiv has been continuously inhabited since the 6th millennium BC, in the end of the 4th millennium BC there already was an established Neolithic settlement there. In the 12th century BC the village evolved into a real town populated by Thracians ranking it among world’s oldest cities.

ANNUAL TUITION FEES
The annual tuition fees for foreign students are defined in May every year by a Decree of the Bulgarian Council of Ministers and later on officially published in the National State Gazette and on the University website.

- Participation and attendance at scheduled lectures, seminars and practical lab classes.
- Examining of acquired knowledge and skills via mid-term tests, colloquiums, final semester examinations.

TRAKIA UNIVERSITY
Trakia University (TrU) is an autonomous state scientific and educational institution with domicile in Stara Zagora. It was established with a decision of National Assembly on 17.07.1995 pursuant to Art. 53, p. 5 and Art. 86, p. 1 from the Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria and Art.2, p.1 from Higher Education Act (HEA) based on the Higher Institute of zootechnics and Veterinary medicine (HIZVM) and Higher Institute of Medicine (HIM)- Stara Zagora with the existing to them faculties and independent departments. Later, with decrees of the Council of Ministers (CM) (№ 62/26.03.1996, № 16/27.01.1997 and № 374/15.10.1997) the Institute for increasing teacher’s qualification (ITQ) and 4 modified in colleges-institutes – 3 of medicine, in Stara Zagora, Haskovo and Sliven, also 1 technical- from Yambol. With decree № 135/03.07.2002 of Council of Ministers are established Faculty of Education and Department for information and in-service teacher training (DIITT) and with DCM № 136/03.07.2002 ITQ is closed. Bulgarian- Germany college of Agriculture (BGAC) is included in the structure of Trakia university with DCM № 182/11.09.2000. The college is a descendant of pre-existing college for farmers. With a letter of Ministry of Education, Youth and Science with outgoing № 25110/10.01.2000, structure of Trakia university is approved as complying with the requirements of Art.26, p.1, p.1 from HEA and later after the establishment of Faculty of Education with a letter of Ministry of Education, Youth and Science with outgoing № 0302-197/29.09.2004 and it’s actualized.
Trakia University is one of the first accredited universities that has received full institutional accreditation as “very good” by NEAA with Protocol № 30/18.03.1999 for a period of 5 years with the right to teach in educational and scientific degree “Doctor” ”/Letter of NEAA with outgoing № 137/19.03.1999/.
Trakia University’s duration of study in medicine is 6 years and the tuition fee is €7000 per year. For veterinary medicine, the duration is 5,5 years and the tuition fee is €4000 per year.
